Peace Through Development

Countries: Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso

Challenge

Parts of West Africa are increasingly challenged by poverty and an escalation in violent voices. To address this, USAID’s Peace Through Development (PDEV) is a community-focused initiative engaging young people in livelihood, vocational and media related activities that promote social cohesion, strengthen moderate voices and engage, and empower communities through radio drama and discussion.

InterMedia has been hired to conduct baseline surveys in Burkina Faso, Chad, and Niger as part of the monitoring and evaluation strategy for the PDEV  II initiative.  InterMedia is working with International Relief and Development (and their partners including Search for Common Ground and Equal Access), building on a successful partnership for the PDEV I program.

Approach

The baseline survey program includes face-to-face interviews in each target country. Data is being collected from carefully selected target zones where program activities will be focused. Interviews have been conducted in numerous national and local languages, and have included using audio recordings to train enumerators to consistently ask survey questions in languages that have no written form.

In a part of the world where survey research infrastructure is limited we have been strengthening local capacity by recruiting enumerators from the communities being served by the program and providing them with comprehensive training and quality control oversight throughout the survey process. We have also worked closely with our local enumeration partner providing project management consultancy and best practice guidance to ensure robust data is collected on time and within budget.

Insight

As the project is ongoing, InterMedia does not have data or insights yet.  When the project is finished, InterMedia will run workshops to disseminate results to partner organizations and help guide implementation strategies.
