New York Times Explores China’s Influence in African Media


The Chinese Communist Party is spending upwards of $7 billion on expanding their media presence in developing countries, particularly in Africa, according to a recent New York Times article.

According to the article, “At a time when most Western broadcasting and newspaper companies are retrenching, China’s state-run news media giants are rapidly expanding in Africa and across the developing world. They are hoping to bolster China’s image and influence around the globe, particularly in regions rich in the natural resources needed to fuel China’s powerhouse industries and help feed its immense population.”

The New York Times reached out to InterMedia’s Vivien Marles, who noted that while most Kenyans still get their media from Western or local sources, “China Radio International is gaining some momentum.”
